Lin Zhipeng’s work, often made in collaboration with friends, speaks of desires and freedoms sought by his generation. Born in 1979 in China and naming himself ‘No.223’ after the police character in Wong Kar-Wai’s movie Chungking Express, Lin adopts a sense of the Hong Kong director’s poetic, dream-like atmosphere as well as the emotional ambiguity of many characters.
He portrays Chinese urban subculture and frames it in erotic, often insolent and chaotic scenes. Together with LGBTQIA+-related themes, fruits, textiles and flowers often become twisty symbols of his work, which he then connects with the subjects of his portraits. A soft sense of carefreeness, yet at times melancholy, amidst a lifestyle going against the entrapments of expected social norms, saturates Lin’s photographs and proclaims him a leading figure in the recent Chinese photography scene.
