Memories can be comforting, but they are also deceptive, painful, distorted, embellished, constructed, tangled, unreliable, and shaped to fit a certain meaning. Every memory is also an act of exclusion. What we choose to focus on causes something else to fade. Remembering and forgetting are not opposites, but two sides of the same process, as memory scholar Aleida Assmann emphasizes.
