Barcelona based artist, Carlota Guerrero, deals with the Zeitgeist and with the vision of women as goddesses. Due to her female portraits she has become one of the most sought-after creators of the moment.
Based on the absence of female symbols linked to positions of power and their impact on shaping our common perceptions regarding authority and vigour, Guerrero’s work aims to fill this imaginary gap by generating a new feminist symbolism. This selection of photographs showcases a range of mostly unreleased works that perform as windows to a more raw matriarchal utopia.
The installation presents a fundamental moment when past and present woman archetypes are confronted under the veil of an imposed male gaze, which Guerrero wants to subvert. Here, the mentioned lack of symbolic female references meets with the current hyper-medialized times, where pop is used as a channel for the spiritual and the divine.
As an attempt to heal this female millenary wound, Guerrero’s oeuvre brings the utopia closer to reality by presenting a series of poetically fabricated myths of a female past that has not existed but makes space for the future by expanding the limits of our common imagination.
